1 month's notice... YIKES!

As I write this (because it will be posted later-need hubby's permission...) it is 12:48am...

I laid down with hubby around 10pm, cuddled, read a little, turned out the lights. Around 12 I couldn't handle tossing and turning... so what did I do? I painted my toenails teal. Yeah, random. Then I made a list of things I need to get done around the house, errands that need to be run, and projects that need to be finished. So... semi-productive.

I had a job interview earlier this week. It went amazingly well, I'm pretty much just waiting for the call saying "you're in, training begins on..."

Only to tell them- "I'm sorry, I won't be able to take the position."

Why? Well, the very next day (ie: why I can't sleep and am awake writing this)- I kid you not this happened:

I'm finishing up a batch of blueberry muffins for a bake sale my friend is hosting, hubs walks storms in at 3pm, way early for him to get home. Drops everything in his hands either at the front door or on the kitchen table, then proceeds to open the fridge, crack open a beer, and starts drinking before he even acknowledges me standing right there in front of him putting muffins in ziplock baggies.

Me- I take it today was rough?
Him- Do you want the good news or bad news?
Me- Bad first.
Him- We might be moving soon.
Me- How soon?
Him- My orders say October...*
Me- Oh. The good news?
Him- We got the duty station we wanted...
Me- How on earth are we suppose to prepare for that in a month?**
Him- Yeah...about that...

*We were suppose to be here until next July (2011), this move is 9mo-10mo early
**This duty station requires putting everything we own on a boat... usually you are suppose to send your item 1-3mo in advance. TMO only pays for 1 car, which means I need to sell mine.

We'll see if the Marine Corps is telling the truth soon enough... and if they are... we're in for one heck of a month!

This will be my first military PCS... when we got married I flew/drove my things here. Any advice from all of you seasoned veterans? What should I pack myself (not trust TMO with), since we have to fly to this duty station we'll only have 2 bags each. How do you organize before TMO comes to your house? Any tips, tricks, special precautions?

ALSO- has anyone flown with guinea pigs before, which airline did you use? It's going to absolutely DEVASTATE me if we have to give our fur-babies away =/ *yes they are allowed where we are going, I just haven't found an airline that will fly them...

  3. Congrats on getting duty station of choice!
Pack any important papers--(I'm sure you already figured that) and anything you would otherwise consider irreplaceable...Like I took all of my pictures, recipes that my grandmother had handwritten back in the day...That may by harder for you though since you have to fly (I could just throw all my things in the car...)
And a BIG BOTTLE OF ALEVE for when people begin to flat out piss you off.

  4. OH--and another tip..you have to keep an eye on your movers. I had a trash bag that I was throwing...you know...trash in. And they packed it and delivered it. They'll basically pack anything in sight so just make sure if it's trash or anything you don't want packed to put it in some special place :)

  7. I hand carry all paperwork - financials, marriage license, passports, old IDs, SSN cards, anything that would be a pain in the ass to lose. Then I have a couple of valuables I hand carry, more sentimental than anything. And I always hand carry my dogs' two favorite chew toys. Good luck moving the pigs. If you find an airline please post about it. Just in case I ever need to fly the bunnies anywhere.

  11. I am fairly sure you can fly any pet (that's not considered a danger to humans, so no snakes lol) with you as a passenger... you just have to buy a seat for them?! I think... I'm not sure. Just start calling airlines.

  12. Oh, wow!! That IS fast!! If it makes you feel any better, my husband got orders after AIT that told us we were leaving in about 3 weeks. Of course, we kind of knew that it would be soon, but there was never a guarantee.I hope things go smoothly for you. And put a whole lot more things in unaccompanied baggage than you think you'll need (if you get that...). I fly my dog on Delta, and I'm fairly certain they take other animals too.
